Loukas Tsoukalis

Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration, University of Athens and President, ELIAMEP


Loukas Tsoukalis was born in Athens. He studied economics and international relations at the University of Manchester, the College of Europe in Bruges, and the University of Oxford where he obtained his doctoral degree. His previous appointments include: Professorial Fellow, Robert Schuman Centre, European University Institute, Florence; Professor at the European Institute of the London School of Economics and Political Science; Director of European Economic Studies, College of Europe, Bruges; President of the Administrative Council and Direct of the Hellenic Centre for European Studies (EKEM), Athens; University Lecturer and Fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford; Ambassador and Special Adviser for EC affairs to the Prime Minister of Greece. He is presently Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at the University of Athens, President of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe. He is engaged in several research programmes. Member of boards of directors of private companies and editorial boards of international journals. Author of many books and articles on European and international affairs, including The New European Economy and What Kind of Europe?, published by Oxford University Press and translated into several European languages. Updated and expanded paperback edition in 2005. Commander of the Order of the Phoenix of the Hellenic Republic. Since April 2005, Professor Tsoukalis is Special Adviser to Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission.
