“Perceptions of Europe”: European and transcontinental views – Discussion with A.Triandafyllidou, ELIAMEP, A.Ichijo, Kingston University, B.Strath, University of Helsinki and A.Kaya, Bilgi University
The second meeting of the EU-funded Research Project on European Identities and European Modernities (IME) took place in Athens on 19-20 November, hosted by ELIAMEP.
IME investigates the diversity and commonalities among European identities in the nine cases. It examines the various ways in which diverse self-definitions have been formulated and maintained in different societal, cultural and systemic settings and how these may further interact as the process of European integration continues. In tackling these big issues, the project draws from the theory of multiple modernities and the ways in which religion, secularisation, rationalisation and material progress has been experienced in these nine European countries.
Prof. Anna Triandafyllidou, Senior research fellow at ELIAMEP, discusses with Atsuko Ichijo, Project coordinator and Senior fellow at Kingston University in London, Bo Strath, Distinguished Professor at University of Helsinki and Ayhan Kaya, Associate Professor at Bilgi University, Istanbul, their views on how Europe is defined and debate what Europe and the European Union mean in different contexts.
